This is a sketch of one possible system used for the collection of rainwater. this system is low maintenance and created using easily replaceable parts.
-the water is collected on the roof and travels from the guttering system down to a leaf eater to remove any large foreign material from the water.
- on ground level the water passes through a sump arrangement which removes more minute foreign material from the water before sending it on to the collection tank.
- the collection tank can be made out of concrete or galvanized steel with an appropriate liner to protect the quality of the water
- it is not recommended that pvc tanks be used as they may contain chemicals which can spoil the water they hold.
- when the water is needed it can be pumped directly from the storage tank into the house, although it is recommended that the water being used is situated above the level of the appliance which will be using it, therefore a header tank can be used which sits higher than the appliances and stores water which can be drained into the appliances by gravity.

Good idea, I like the innovation in these times when water is such a scarce resource. Portability is also a plus.
