DOMUS . final thoughts

DOMUS, KAKADU- C3 (Jess Williamson, Ben Payne, Andrew Stent)

As an assignment, I found this to be one of the most enjoyable I have taken part in. I loved working in a group, bouncing off one another and throwing around ideas. I found it so much more realistic, and loved the overall scale of the brief. I found it to be enough of a challenge while still being manageable for the three of us.

After much discussion, we came upon our final design, a very linear structure constructed using steel piers, driven into the site. The building itself was constructed using much treated hardwood decking and reflective steel. The building was fully self sufficient, using the waterfall as a power generator without tampering with the flow, as well as using north facing solar panels with a battery located in the studio. The choice to place it on top of the waterfall was to use the wet stone as a cooling method as well as using the cliff itself for shade to allow glazing which allows the inhabitants to appreciate the terrific view. We loved the fact that it was placed upon moving water which discourages the still humidity of other water catchments as well as minimises the presence of mosquitos.

We, as a group, were very proud of our design, feeling we had satisfied the brief and taken a risk with it's overall effect. While our mark and review did not reflect this, we remain proud of the assignment we submitted and have learned so much from one another during the course of the task and also from our tutors and lecturers.

POSTERS:
Hand drawn, reflect drawings high in character and colour.

MODEL:
Made from balsa and 3 different colours of card. This we found to be a very dynamic element of our presentation. Our design was very dramatic and our model, including our site model made of plaster of paris really dictated how this design would sit in it's specified site.

Great approach to the brief guys, your adaption to the precence of the waterfall aesthetically provided a very dramatic bulding.
The model photographed well and the detail was apparent when looking at it as well.
Also like to commend you on the way you approached the presentation aspect, our posters were lacking a bit in colour so its really inspirational to see the confidence you had in hand drawn and coloured posters.
